What Social Media Is
“Social” Media differs from traditional media in that it is a two-way communication. No longer is there a divide between the “communicator” and the “consumer”- the two are one and the same thing. What this means is that for any social media efforts to be successful, they should be approached like a discussion instead of like a broadcast.
What Social Media Is NOT
Social Media is not just the latest cool way to distribute the same old material. Since it’s such a personal interaction, any communication on social media that sounds like a press release is immediately ignored or discarded- it hurts your credibility. Instead of sounding like a PR machine, social media should provide a door and a window into an organization; showing its inner workings and inviting people to engage with it.
