Hi everyone,
We've started our digital storytelling workshops last week using Open Source software. The first group was from a boys juvenile detention camp. They were cool. They really got into their projects and enjoyed themselves in the process. This week we have a mixed group of kids ranging from 8 to 12 years old. I will post up some examples soon.

Hey Naomi!
Great, so glad that you were able to rework your story, and that it's posted on the OTX site. Did Domingo post his, too?
And it's awesome that your program was in the news! How did they find out about OTX? Did you send out a press release? I'm curious, because I would love to better publicize some of our programs, and I'm sure other VISTAs would, too.

Hey Jessica,
Doming does have his story on the site. Here is the link if you want to check it out.

We were able to get on the news because Domingo's wife works for the news station. I guess it helps to have connections in the industry.

Hey there! So glad to hear that ur workshops are going so well. I'll check out ur story as soon as I get to a computer that actually wants to work right.-lol
I taught my first class last week and it went great! I usually just teach the Internet section of the class but this time I taught the whole thing. Our classes at OTX-West are 3 hours long and we teach basic computer training, Internet, and the OpenOffice programs Writer (similar to Word) and Impress (similar to PowerPoint). It was fun and the students and parents enjoyed it as well. I received great evaluations from them on my performance so that's cool.

Hey Naomi,
Are you guys going to do any digital storytelling at OTX West? Did you finish your story yet? Are you going to post it anywhere when it's done?
I tried to give you a call today but the office phone just rang and rang! Give me a call or drop me an email so we can chat!

I've been in California for a month and a half now and I love it! I found a place to live in Alameda which is just outside of Oakland where I work. Alameda is really nice and safe. I love my job and the people I work with are really cool!
I have been busy with a few projects at work. I developed an addition to their 3 hour Take Home Computer Class (THCP). This class provides Oakland students in grades 6-12 with basic computer training along with training on the Open Source software (OpenOffice, The Gimp, Audacity, typing tutors, anti-virus, anti-spyware, etc.) that we install on each computer. Once the students take the class, then they receive a free refurbished computer with free life time tech support.

Hey Naomi,
I've been meaning to call you so we can find a time to get together. I'm thinking that next week I'll finally have the free time for a meeting. Let's talk on Monday and figure something out!

Naomi--Thanks for bringing it to my attention that we don't have the upload file types allowed for ODF documents.
Now you should be able to upload extensions with .odt, .ods, .odp, and .odg. I'm happy to hear you're using them.
Also, for anyone on a Mac, NeoOffice is a great port of OpenOffice.org.
Also, my favorite open source drawing app is Inkscape, a vector drawing program somewhat similar to illustrator, but easier to use.

Thanks Ben! I just uploaded the OpenOffice copy of my slide show.
I forgot to mention Inkscape in my blog. My organization also uses it in their digital storytelling workshops and I have been learing it as well.

I flew to Oakland from the Boston PSO at 10:30 pm (I'm a Philly girl so that is 1:30 am my time) and was so tired yet filled with excitement. I can't believe my cat and I made it in one piece! My supervisor from OTX-West (Oakland Technology Exchange) picked me up from the airport. I was missing one of my bags thanks to Delta but that didn't bother me because I was in Cali! My supervisor took me to my co-workers house in Alameda where I would be staying until I find a place. Him and his wife are really cool folks. They've never met me but they offered their home to me. We sat back and talked, ate expensive cheese and drank some wine (now that's my kind of greeting).

Hey you! SO glad you and your cat made it. Good luck with your project!
Comment from Naomi Jimenez on January 24, 2007 - 5:23pm
Hey Dana! Thanks! Yeah my cat and I are doing well. He started eating and drinking again on Saturday night (he was too traumatised to eat for a day or so). I have been trying to get use to the time difference but they say it should take me a week to adjust. Other than that, I am doing well. I hope you are well and I will talk to you soon.
Later...

What's up Mike! Oakland is treating me nice. I did get my bag back the next day so that's good. I have been doing a lot to get acquainted with how my job functions so I've been pretty busy. Anywho, I will keep everyone posted on my work here at OTX-West. Later...

hey naomi,
Jessica McCoy here, CTC VISTA living and working in Berkeley. We should get dinner/tea/drinks sometime. Also, I'm looking for an apartment right now, too. If you haven't found a place yet, let me know and maybe we can join forces.
Take care,
Jessica

Naomi!
That's awesome news that you got hired at OTX - looked like an inevitably awesome choice for both you and OTX.
Go VISTA!
