Today was my first day at the media aid center and its all good.  I didnt know what I was in for, but I have to say these kids are really on the ball. It was cool to see they have a basic idea of what they want to see on the screen, they just needed a little  more focus and some help on making a story board. I helped them stream line a chain of command and stressed the importance of having a time-line to stay on task.  WE MAKIN IT HAPPEN ROUND HERE]!

From East to West...

Hi everyone! My name is Naomi and I'm from Philly. I headed to Oakland and I'm really excited to be serving in the beautiful state of California. It's a big move for me since I've never lived anywhere else. If I end up loving California (which I know I will), I will stay after my year is over. Well, I guess I will keep everyone posted on how things go. See ya!

Hi Naomi!

I'm a CTC VISTA member down the road from you (okay, maybe a little further than just down the road) in sunny San Diego.  I started my service in mid-September and moved to California because of it.  I was born and raised in Indiana, never living anywhere else (except for a short year in Michigan my freshman year), so the move out here was a big one for me too.  As predicted, I've fallen in love and plan to stay out here and find a job when my term is up!  Good luck to you and welcome to California from one newcomer to another!

In service,

Laura

Hey Laura,

Thanks for the California greeting! I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who up and moved far from home to serve. I think I was the only one at the this years PSO that was relocating (I stuck out like a sore thumb with all my baggage and my cat). It's a little scary  because I don't know anyone but I am looking forward to this experience of living somewhere other than Philly. I hope to fall in love with Cali as well so I can stay when my year is over. Take care of yourself!

Here in Boston, MA - UMass.

Awesome Campus.

Comfort Inn (Morrissey Blvd) - There's TWO (Comfort Inns) from the airport
(get on the RIGHT shuttle) - Morrisey Blvd (at the airport - courtesy phone) is
the "Boston" Comfort Inn.

Alaska Airlines - CRAMPED.

Lost container in baggage ($ 10 value - no biggie) and baggage claim receipt.

Love the area, but, still looking forward to going home - getting started.

Addendum:

Took notes on

Castle Court Vista Wi-Fi project (Emilio Flores and Patrick Otton)

and

Copyright issues for New Media and Technology (Rebee Garafalo)
will post them over the weekend.

PSO

Today is the first full day of the PSO in Boston. I have met some cool people and it will be good to be in contact with some of these people because of their various fields of interest. Have sat through a lot of presentations today, and I've learned about some useful information. Actually sort of  anxious to get back to UTEC and work on some stuff - this is important but its pretty long - at least we get to go bowling tonight. Overall, this has been a good experience and I'm glad I have been able to meet new people and learn more about the VISTA project.

I'm here. I'm bloggin'. Booyah!

A bit more about myself... I just graduated in December from the University of Wisconsin - Madison with a B.A. in Psychology and will be starting on *Monday* working with DANEnet in Madison.  I grew up in Janesville, WI and also spent my first collegiate year at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa.  I encourage you to facebook or myspace me to learn more about the fantastic entity that is myself!  ^_^  I'm looking forward to serving as a CTC VISTA, arranging community programming, and learning more about website design!

PTD's Youth Action Summit photos

Categories:

Just a quick note to post some photos I took yesterday at Project Think Different's Youth Action Summit. The Media Watch Team, under the direction of CTC VISTA Colleen Kelly and former VISTA Cara Powers, led discussions in the state of Boston youth's representation in mainstream media and some actions they might take to change the situation. Some of that action will take place on their new electronic community (built in Drupal by CTC VISTA Dina Vecchiarelli). More photos here

as the World Turns

The Children’s Partnership has been through major changes in the last two weeks.  As you may have heard, my supervisor, James Lau, has left TCP to accept an offer to take a position as the assistant executive director of the California League of Conservation Voters Ed Fund.  The environment has always been James’ passion, so it is a perfect fit for him.  Of course, it is a sad move for me because working with James has been great, but my coworker April is my new supervisor, and she’s fabulous, too. This week, April and I have working on several pressing projects with TCP and CCTPG.  I’ve been busy writing an issue brief on children with disabilities and broadband technology’s promise, as well as working on a new Techpolicybank update, a memo on digital copyright law and a few how-to manuals I’ll be able to leave to whomever takes over my responsibilities when I’m gone.  Which, for the record, I don’t want to think about.

Hey girl,

Can't believe you're almost done! Want to be a VISTA Leader ;) ? Who are the how-to manuals for and on what?

I'd love to be a VISTA leader if I don't get into grad school!  The how-to manuals will primarily cover the use of the CivicSpace site for CCTPG's purposes and a guide on how to use Graphic Mail.  We've also discussed possibly adding another guide covering basic responsibilities I've had.

cool documentary that i think digital media folks working with youth might like to see...

as a vista in the city i am alway looking out for free and interesting events. the public library in san francisco is pretty amazing at showing free films a couple of times per month and last night i had the pleasure of checking out the awesome documentary by Byron Hurt entitled " Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes." The documentary take as in-depth look at masculinity, misogyny, violence and homophobia within mainstream hip hop music and culture. although i thought the analysis could have run a bit deeper, the film makes a point to trace the interconnections of white supremacy, racism, homophobia, sexism and capitalism. and not only that, there are appearances by 50cent, mos def, fat joe and a bunch of other famous artists.

the screening was sponsored by a bunch of youth media production companies in the bay area and many of the audience members were youth affiliated with the said organizations. the film is showing on pbs, tuesday, february 20th so check your local listings. i know that there are screenings of the film around the country. a five minute cut of the documentary is also on youtube.

check it out and happy hump day.
